Fun Kids Tri – 24th May 2008

Although a small turn-out for the East Essex Tri Squad this year, this event turned out to be full of excitement and thrills with an amazing standard of competition.

Hannah Shean was the first competitor for EETC in Tri Stars 1. Unfortunately, the organisers decided they would like to just have one wave of competitors, so decided to put four swimmers in a lane without seeding. This made the swim a little challenging for the stronger swimmers. Anyway Hannah exited the pool, made a good transition and headed onto the bike, unfortunately at this point her chain fell off, luckily dad wasn’t too far away and managed to fix things, but Hannah had a lot of work to do on the 2 lap course to catch up.  Hannah finished the bike and raced out onto the run finishing in fourth place. (She later found out she was third as a girl was a lap short on the bike.) Well done for not giving up when everything seemed to be going wrong!

Hannah Kane was next up in Tri Stars 2 and once again was in a wave with a large amount of competitors and a lane full of swimmers. A good transition and a strong bike leg pulled Hannah up through the ranks, and then she stormed out onto the run course where she produced her best running ever! Well done, Hannah!

George Knight was determined to do well. He was fully prepared and raring to go on his new bike after a very good swim. The organisers had made it very clear that it was the responsibility of the parents to count laps and make sure their child had completed them all. So Dave Knight positioned himself where George would be able to see and hear him after the appropriate number of laps. George had a great bike leg and a great run leg and after finishing said to his dad  - “I never heard you tell me to come in” Dad replied

“I didn’t, you had another lap to do!”   DOH!  Still, George took the responsibility of informing the referee himself rather than waiting for it to be picked up in the results showing great maturity.

Tri Star 3 boys was a very fast and exciting race and amongst the fray for East Essex were George Smith and Matt Kane. Once again a large number of swimmers, but George produced a great swim with Matt following. They then cycled solid bike legs in a very competitive field and held their own on the run course. This was a great race for spectators as the standard and ability of all the competitors was fantastic. Great efforts Lads!

Last up was the Youths race. The Tri Stars 3 had warmed the spectators up to expect excitement and the Youths did not disappoint. As there only a few girls entered they decided to start them with the boys. If any of the boys thought this would make the race a little easier they were well and truly mistaken! From the start of the swim to the end of the run the pace of this race was fast and furious (with just a little illegal drafting). William Muggleton was not left standing in this melee and produced strong solid results in all three disciplines. As the last EETC athlete on the course he was treated to a Hungarian Wave by the rest of the East Essex Kids!
