**** Update ****

Following a judicial review Tri Sport Effing have been found guilty of fielding an unregistered runner and have had their score adjusted accordingly; unfortunately they still beat Barking by 2 points so the positions stand. Those in the know are not surprised, they just wonder why it took so long for the misdemeanours to be recognised.

And another season draws to a close as the league was able to complete a full five match series at the new (to the league) venue of Gloucester Park, Basildon. The venue gave the competitors a short sharp shock as they tackled the big hill from three different directions twice.

The hills finally provided the opportunity for someone to challenge Rob Warner as both Steve Whittaker (first for Benfleet) and Crispin Bloomfield (second for Billericay) prevented his attempt at the league grand slam. For the ladies Loretta Sollars of East Essex Tri recorded her third win of the series.

Onto the league and in division one it was first for Billericay and second for Benfleet which sealed their respective positions of first and second in the league overall. Billericay managed a very impressive 102 points to Benfleet's 125. At the other end of the table division 1 bids a fond farewell to Havering who will be welcomed into Division 2 next season. In division 2 it was a different story as Effing cocked a snook at the rest of division 2 as they achieved promotion; the other clubs cheered and partied the night away knowing that they wouldn't have to deal with them next season. They cheers even louder when they heard that East Essex had beaten them in the final race of the season to prevent Effing from the clean sweep. Seriously though, thanks to Benfleet and TSE for helping with the marshalling to make sure the event was a success for all.

Many thanks to all clubs who have put in the effort to put races on this season, one new club, two new races and lots of new runners shows what a good shape the league is in.

31 January 2010 - Thorndon Park (Results available from link above)

The series back on but the weather was still cold and the ground hard as Thrift Green entertained the league at Thorndon Park today. Business as usual as Havering's Rob Warner once again wrapped up the individual competition with a splendid performance and Loretta Sollars of East Essex won her battle with Benfleet's ladies to take her second race of the series.

In division 1 things are hotting up, a win for Billericay gives them a one point lead over Benfleet going into the final race. Thrift Green are effectively out of it for this year but could still play a big part by splitting the two top teams; today there was only 21 points between the top three teams and plenty of individuals just thinking what could have been if they had worked that one extra place on the home straight.

In division 2 there were shouts of "Boring Boring" as Fulbrook's Effers took the spoils; they will be in division 1 next year to the pleasure of those in division 2, while those in division 1 are looking forward to slapping them down to size.

6 December 2009 - Hadleigh Downs (Results available from link above)

**** Late but not necessarily surprising news - The results for Tri Sport Effing were found to be no where near as good as they claimed on the day; they did however still win the division 2 on the day - look out Effing, we're all watching you  ******

A weekend sky full of rain welcomed everyone to Hadleigh Downs for Benfleet RC's round of the Cross Country race series. I felt particularly sorry for the marshals seeing them heading off for the course in the worst of the weather but they all had smiles on their faces and encouraged everyone round as usual - big up the marshals!

Those with studs for the race were the smug ones as those with spikes or cross trainers slipped, slithered and fell all around them but this was cross country running at its very best.

For the race itself it was business as usual for Rob Warner who once again won the race but couldn't stop his team finishing last in division 1. For the ladies Stacey Ward from Benfleet returned to winning ways on her home patch.

First division was also a rerun of Weald Park with Benfleet losing out to Billericay, this time by a mere 18 points. Trotters brought home the bacon in third with castle Point again holding off Havering for fourth.

Second division is becoming a familiar story too with the Effers once again clinching the win and they must be confident now of taking the crown (don't you just hate it when that happens). East Essex were second with Barking third, Pitsea fourth and Dagenham fifth. Phoenix were a no show so awarded 6th and a lot of points.

On to Hockely Woods next with East Essex hosting for the first time in living memory (although Rob Fulbrook can probably remember it). There will be three funnels at the end, one for ladies, one for gents and a special one for Tri Sport Effing - I have commissioned a JCB to start digging the pit for them now.

15 November 09 - Weald Park (Results available from link above)

Question: What is 2 + 2? Answer: anything you like if you run Tri Sport Effing.

And lo it was that new boys Dagenham were given last place at Dunton with 1884 points when they should have come 5th with 1211 points. All blame lies with Tri Sport, the Craig Revel Horwoods of the league, but don't worry Dagenham, you're my new favourites.

So onto Weald Park and once again Rob Warner shines for Havering with his second win in as many races. For the ladies it was Loretta Sollars, recording a second win in only her second Cross Country race for East Essex.

For the league and unfortunately Rob's good work could not prevent Havering from coming in last in division 1, beaten by Castle Point and Thrift Green Trotters who came 4th and 3rd accordingly. Congratulations to home club Billericay who pipped Benfleet by a mere 21 points.

In division 2 the results are somewhat different from those stated on the day with all 6 clubs maintaining their positions from the previous race including a highly suspicious first place once again for Effing. Individual results available from the link above

27 October 09 - Dunton (Results available from link above)

What's going on? I leave the country (okay, I go to Wales) for 2 days and what happens? Tri Sport Effing pull out of the hat a dodgy 245 points to beat all but the league's elite. How could this happen I ask myself, and then the answer becomes apparent - for the first time TSE race on home territory with their own marshals and, oh look, they've done really well!

Anyway, many congratulations to them for winning the division 2 match (I will have to burn the keyboard after typing that) and also congratulations to Benfleet who continue the good form with a clear win. 8 ladies in the first 9 shows just how fit they are - can't wait for the 2010 Benfleet RC Nudes calendar(should be available soon at http://www.benfleetrunningclub.com/). First lady was Stacey Ward with a clear 90 second win over Charlotte Peppiaty; for the men Rob Warner broke the Ryan / Crispin monopoly with a 35 second win over Crispin.

See you all on 15 November.

September 09

It's all change for the 2009/10 season of the South Essex Cross Country League; firstly the changes:-

  • After many years Havering and Pitsea are taking a well deserved rest from race organisation so One Tree Hill and Stubbers are now removed from the calendar.
  • We welcome new club Dagenham 88 into the league to make a 6 team division 2.
  • After many years of abuse at the hands of East Essex Tri, Ford Fitness have reinvented themselves as Tri Sport Epping. They will retain the letter "F" as their identification. A league spokesmen stated "The letter F never stood for Ford or Fitness" and it is totally apt that this team retains the letter now they've been renamed Tri Sport Effing"
  • Tri Sport Effing will be putting on a new event at Ford's Research and Engineering Centre at Dunton; they did ask Ford to rename the Venue "Effing Research and Engineering Centre" but the request was declined
  • East Essex will be putting on an event at Hockley Woods. Unfortunately there is no parking available at the race HQ (Belchamps Scout Camp) but parking is possible around half a mile away at Clements Hall Leisure Centre. Please do not park in local residential streets as we don't want to create local opposition for future races.
  • Races information is supplied below.

Some key things to remember:-

  • It is important that all runners wear official club kit for the races.
  • Competitors must also display their club's letter on their shirt.
  • Given the increased numbers in recent years the need for car sharing is becoming more and more important. Please try to offer lifts wherever possible.
